  • Literacy Campaign Successes Reported in Ecuador

    The Ecuadorian embassy in Cuba and the Cuban Foreign Office have issued a joint progress report on a literacy campaign in Azuay province, Ecuador, where nearly 7,000 people have learnt to read and write for the first time, reducing the provincial illiteracy rate from 12.5 to 3.8%.

    In recent months Brazil has suffered from a series of what used to be known as ‘unusual climatic events’ -- severe droughts in the south, flooding in the Amazon and torrential rain in the northeast. A small town in the interior of the northeastern state of Piauí is the scene of the latest disaster.
